Professional Photographer Feature

Posted by John Keatley / Filed under News, Personal Work, Press & Interviews

As some of you may know, last year I began a little portrait project with my iPhone and Instagram.  It began almost as an accident, but quickly became a project very close to my heart.  I have met some amazing people and heard some incredible stories along the way.  Like Jordan’s story for example.  Within just a few months, I got a call from KING 5 about going on New Day NW (watch video) as well as several other interviews.  One of those interviews just came out this month in Professional Photographer Magazine as a full feature.  As a photographer, it’s exciting to shoot for a feature, but a feature about my work is a whole new level of excitement.  Thank you so much to Jade Price and everyone at Professional Photographer for your support and interest in my work.  I feel like I am just getting started with my iPhone Portrait project, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next.

January Links

Posted by Izzy / Filed under Press & Interviews, Review

Is January already over? Somebody pinch me, this cannot be real! It has been an exciting month in the Keatley offices, and it looks like it is only going to get better from here! Last month John proved to be a very popular guy around town, with many great blog and editorial mentions regarding his work throughout last year. Some of the more notable ones, well worth a read are the City Arts feature that you can see here, and the interview Mull it Over did, seen here. Very exciting.

In addition to John’s photography getting some great attention, the blog has too. Photoshelter’s 2011 round-up gave mentions of the blog, one for John’s VSCO Film review, and the other for the ever-popular Christmas photo and Woodsman short film that accompanied it. If you haven’t watched it yet, do, and if you’ve already seen it, you probably want to again so, here’s the link.

Plenty more great projects in the works, so stay tuned!

I’ve Been Framed

Posted by John Keatley / Filed under BTS, Press & Interviews, Videos

Thank you to everyone who wrote in and asked the fine folks at FRAMED to do an interview with me. It was very flattering to get the call to do this, and fun to spend the day with Melissa and the whole crew. I am blown away by what a great job they did with this video from top to bottom. They actually made me look somewhat respectable, which is no small feat.  In about 15 years, when Isla is an unruly teenager, I am going to make her watch this video, and then I will look her in the eyes, and say, “Respect”.

I know that 36 minute ticker may scare some of you, but I got several comments and emails today from people who said they didn’t plan on watching more than three minutes, and ended up getting sucked in and watched the whole thing.  Hopefully that is incentive enough to press play.  Even if you only have time for three minutes.  There are no axes, or wood carving in this video, but there are a couple of pretty funny moments with a (Spoiler Alert!) karate master.  Which reminds me, I am really excited you get to meet some of my creative companions who pop up in the video as well.

As always, thanks so much for your interest and support of my work.  It means a lot to me, and thank you again to FRAMED!

Podcast Interview on Faded & Blurred

Posted by John Keatley / Filed under Press & Interviews

The blog Faded & Blurred which recently posted a really nice article about my photography, also just interviewed me for their podcast series.  Jeffery came up with some thoughtful questions, and I like how our conversation covered topics not often discussed in typical interviews.  It is also worth mentioning I make a pretty big announcement part way through the interview.  It wasn’t necessarily something I was planning on talking about just yet, but it made sense in the context of our discussion and I think the time is right.  That is all I will say about it for now.  You are going to have to listen for yourself to find out the details.  Thanks for listening, I hope you enjoy it.

Thank you to Jeffery Saddoris for his support and interest in my work.  Here is the link to the interview.

Adorama TV: Video Interview with John Keatley

Posted by John Keatley / Filed under Blog, Press & Interviews

Here is my new video interview on Adorama TV, hosted by Mark Wallace.  I was really impressed with Mark’s questions, and I think the video turned out great.   Some of the questions include the gear I use, what it was like photographing Annie Leibovitz, how I approach photographing celebrities who are aligned with hot issues, and much more.  I am going to keep this pretty short because of the video, and there  isn’t really anything I need to add.  Thanks for taking a look, I hope you enjoy it.

Photography Talk Video: Chapter Two

Posted by John Keatley / Filed under Press & Interviews, Videos

Photography Talk Chapter Two Video from John Keatley on Vimeo.

I hope you enjoyed the first video of my photography talk.  As promised, here is the second video, and number three will be rolling out very soon also.  The third one will be the Q&A session.  I cover a lot of ground in this video including working with celebrities, but the main points are focusing on what you are trying to show in your work, and taking control to make it happen.  Some of you have asked which camera these videos were shot on and although I have recently started to shoot video on the Canon 5D Mark II, I actually used this bad boy to film my talk.

Photography Talk Video: Chapter One

Posted by John Keatley / Filed under Press & Interviews, Videos

Photography Talk Chapter One Video – My Photography Story from John Keatley on Vimeo.

A couple of months ago I hosted a Q&A and spoke about my photography to a group of about 100 people in Seattle.  Many people who were not able to attend sent in questions, and expressed interest in watching a recording of the talk.  Well, the wait is over.  This is the first 15 minutes of the talk and I am going to do my best to have the rest up by the end of the week. So check back often.  Enjoy, and thank you everyone who came out to hear me, and to everyone else who is reading this for your interest in my work.

Photographer Video Profile: John Keatley

Posted by John Keatley / Filed under Press & Interviews

I made a quick stop in New York last November, and while I was there I headed over to Redux to do a video profile shoot.  They have been pumping out some great videos of many of the photographers on the roster, and you can see them all at the Redux site as well as the Redux Vimeo page.
This is a pretty cool idea, and hopefully will help art buyers get some insight into how each photographer works.  The videos should also make for some good marketing material in the coming year.

I hope everyone had a restful December, and you are looking forward to 2010.  I have really enjoyed taking some time off recently.  It has given me the opportunity to clear my head, and re-focus for the year to come.  I’m learning the importance of slowing down every once in a while, and just taking a rest.  With the way things are going these days, it’s easy to think you have to constantly be creating new material to keep up.  I suppose it is possible to keep up that kind of pace but it is also exhausting.  I want to make sure I am staying balanced so I can create through inspiration, rather than creating because I feel I have to.

Thank you everyone for your continued interest in my work.  I am working on some projects right now I am very excited about, and I am looking forward to sharing my photography with you in 2010!

Interview On PDN Features

Posted by John Keatley / Filed under Personal Work, Press & Interviews

Seattle Seahawks Seagals cheerleader Tessa. Photographed in her home by John Keatley.

PDN just posted a great online article with interviews from me and Danny Wilcox Frazier (here).  It covers our work in the new American Youth book that was released this month.  We have been getting some fantastic press for this, and none of it would have been possible without the wonderful people at Redux.

I am getting ready to head out to New York for two weeks, and I will finally get to see the actual book for the first time.  I am also looking forward to talking with many of the people who put so much time and energy into this project.  Should be fun.

This is an outtake from the book, but one of my favorite pictures from the Seagals pictures.

Special thanks to Jasmine DeFoore and Conor Risch for this article.

Strobist Interview

Posted by John Keatley / Filed under Press & Interviews

Interview with John Keatley on Strobist about his photogrpahy and lighting technique.

Dan Kaminsky for WIRED Magazine, photo by John Keatley.

It’s quite a thrill for me to share with you that there is a new article (read here) about my photography and lighting technique on Strobist.  As you can see, Dan is pretty excited about this as well.  The article details my assignments for WIRED and Technology Review to photograph hacker Dan Kaminsky, and what went into making the final images.  For those of you who have already seen the post, this never before seen outtake from the WIRED shoot is for you.
A very big thank you goes out to David Hobby!
